To restore the habitat around 5 mature, ancient, veteran or next generation open grown trees per borough per year. Especially where these occur as individual or small groups (and especially in urban and farmland settings).
Some suggested ways in which you can contribute to this target:
- Add these individual and small groups of trees into management plans
- Leave long grass, scrub and fallen wood under and around the canopy (e.g. No mowing, ploughing or car parking under the tree's canopy)
- Move footpaths away from under these trees
- Identify, map and survey mature, ancient and veteran trees in Surrey (any new ancient trees found can be entered onto the ancient tree hunt website)
- Avoid unnecessary tree surgery retaining deadwood habitat e.g. move the footpath
- Use tree surgeons registered on the Arboricultural Association Website
- Dead trees and stumps should also be protected and restored as above
